A worrying trend is emerging in Kenya, with armed and hired criminal groups increasingly being used to carry out property evictions, repossessions, and commercial disputes outside formal legal processes.

An investigative report by Nation Africa highlights how landlords, rival business operators, and property claimants are turning to violent youth groups to enforce evictions instead of following court-sanctioned procedures.

The report also points to alleged political and high-level interference in the auctioneering sector. Isaac Musila, chairperson of the Kenya National Society of Professional Auctioneers, said politicians and government officials often intervene to protect their interests, frustrating licensed auctioneers and making it difficult for police to enforce legitimate court orders.

Delays in obtaining police security have also reportedly pushed some property owners to hire private security and unruly groups to carry out repossessions.

The growing reliance on hired goons has raised concerns over the rule of law, public safety, and the protection of property rights, with calls for authorities to ensure that evictions and auctions are conducted through lawful and transparent procedures.
